Social Emotional Learning
Beyond the academics and the spiritual nurturing, Saint Nicholas Catholic School understands that for our student leaders to be successful, they must practice the soft skills to allow them to achieve. St. Nicholas Catholic School has a robust SEL program weaved into each day as part of our commitment to address the whole child.
Our SEL Curriculum
Saint Nicholas Catholic School uses a research-based curriculum, namely Second Step & Responsive Classroom, are used to teach valuable lessons in emotion management, developing empathy, compassion, and problem-solving throughout the week. Moreover, the principles of these programs also establish rules of engagement inside the classroom allowing all students to create classroom commitments and take ownership in developing the classroom culture
Buddy Program: School-wide pair of classes that promotes student leadership and community building.
Counseling Support: By removing the social and emotional obstacles that make it difficult to focus on academics, we give young people a chance to get the most out of the educational opportunities that are provided to them. Independence is the desired outcome but most students do not possess self-advocacy in the beginning. We understand this developmental critical piece and nurture students to take small steps to ask questions, clarify assumptions, and develop and use problem-solving strategies. When we improve students’ social and emotional well-being, academic achievement tends to follow.
The Power Of Yet: Every student quickly learns the power of YET! Our growth mindset philosophy begins in TK and is fostered throughout their time at St. Nicholas School. It is vitally important that all students know how to navigate the times when they are challenged. Lessons to work through the feelings of frustration are implicitly taught so that withdrawal is not the answer and perseverance takes shape. Students are challenged to design solutions themselves and explore the educative value in each path whether failures or successes. This problem-solving, innovative approach is integrated not only in Science, Math but in all subjects.
Academic Resource Support: Many experts in the field help offer our students the opportunity to have their academic needs addressed. Specialties such as Dyslexia coaching, Speech, and Early Reading Intervention, and Executive Functioning are available throughout the day.
Conflict Managers: Students in 5th-8th Grade are given the opportunity to be trained in the tenets of conflict resolution and then use this knowledge as they volunteer their time at recess to help younger children in First through Fourth grade navigate the challenges that are encountered at recess.
